In Other Words

One mystery word. One-word clues. Copies vanish.

One player is the guesser. Everyone else types a single word that should help them name the mystery word. Copies and the word itself are cancelled. What survives goes on the television, unnamed.

A correct guess pays the guesser and every clue that survived. A cancelled clue scores nothing, even when the table gets it. Write something helpful that nobody else will also write.

How to play

  1. One player guesses; everyone else sees the word.
  2. Type one clue. Duplicates and the mystery word itself are burnt.
  3. Surviving clues appear anonymously. The guesser has one try.
  4. Correct: guesser 2, each surviving clue 1. Wrong or pass: nobody scores.
  5. Twelve rounds. Roles rotate.

Is In Other Words free to play?

Yes, and there is nothing to buy later. In Other Words runs in your browser: no download, no app store, no payment.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Open the link and play. It works on a phone, a tablet, a laptop and any television with a browser, and everyone at a table can be on a different kind of device.

What does “In one room” mean?

The clues go on the television. The mystery word stays on the clue-givers' phones, never on the guesser's.

What does “Live online” mean?

Open a table and share a four-character code. The guesser still never sees the word.

How many people can play?

4–8 players, in the same room or live online.

How long does a game take?

About 15 minutes. Want a shorter or a longer game? Choose “Set up your own game” and pick how many cards it takes to win.

Do I need an account?

Only if you want to start a game for other people to join. Playing on one shared screen works without one, and so does joining a game a friend started — you just choose a name.
