The Spy in the Room

Everyone knows the secret word, except one of you.

The television shows a grid. Every phone except one shows which tile is the secret. That remaining phone only knows it is the spy.

Clues are public and named, one at a time around the sofa. Then you vote. Catch them and they still get one guess at the word. Accuse the wrong person, or tie, and the spy slips through.

How to play

  1. One player is the spy; everyone else sees the secret word.
  2. In order, each person types one related word. Illegal clues bounce.
  3. Vote who the spy is. Ties go to the spy.
  4. A caught spy guesses the tile. Correct, or an early correct guess: spy 3.
  5. An early wrong guess pays everyone else 1.

Questions

Is The Spy in the Room free to play?

Yes, and there is nothing to buy later. The Spy in the Room runs in your browser: no download, no app store, no payment.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Open the link and play. It works on a phone, a tablet, a laptop and any television with a browser, and everyone at a table can be on a different kind of device.

What does “In one room” mean?

The grid and the named clues go on the television. The secret stays on non-spy phones.

What does “Live online” mean?

Open a table and share a four-character code. The spy still never sees the word.

How many people can play?

4–8 players, in the same room or live online.

How long does a game take?

About 20 minutes. Want a shorter or a longer game? Choose “Set up your own game” and pick how many cards it takes to win.

Do I need an account?

Only if you want to start a game for other people to join. Playing on one shared screen works without one, and so does joining a game a friend started — you just choose a name.

Ready when your friends are.

No download, no app. The Spy in the Room opens in the browser they already have.
